Washington DC Highlights

I still haven’t posted about my most recent vacation, so I’m using this weeks theme to write about it today. This post is going to be fairly long because we ate a bunch of amazing food.

In May my partner and I went to Washington D.C. (I wrote about stopping at GWAR bar and that was a part of this trip). As a combined Christmas/Birthday gift my parents gave me tickets to see Apocalyptica in the city of my choice. I picked D.C. In part because my partner had never been. So, in May we took a few extra days to explore Washington, D.C.

We arrived at our hotel and hopped on the metro into the city and explored some of the monuments and memorials. Then we hopped on the metro again and went to Fare Well cafe. It’s a vegan restaurant with lots of amazing options.

I ordered the cookie dough milkshake. It’s hard to find vegan milkshakes where I am in NC, so it was great to not have to pull out my blender.

 

For dinner I ordered the chicken fried steak. It was so good, I have to prevent my partner from stealing my dinner.

My partner ordered the burger. He was excited at first because the menu mentioned that it was the new Impossible burger, but with the Impossible burger shortage they had the Beyond Burger instead. My partner was happy with his burger, but he was still jealous of my food.

I assumed the hotel wouldn’t have any vegan options for breakfast, so I ordered a cake to go. I settled for the S’mores cake. It was really moist and delicious. I was surprised to see mini-marshmallows between the layers of cake. It wasn’t the healthiest breakfast, but it was delicious and I was on vacation.

 

Our second day in D.C. we woke up early and went to a lot of museums. We stopped at the Hirshorn gallery and we got lucky. They were serving Thai curries in one of their exhibits and one of the curry options was vegan. It served as a nice snack before visiting more museums.

 

After even more museums we were starving. We hopped on the metro and road up to Takoma Heights. There’s a vegan soul food restaurant just steps from the metro station, Evolve Vegan. My partner and I each paid extra to get Mac and cheese as a side dish to our food.

I got the maple bbq chicken wings, black-eyes peas, and Mac and cheese. My partner ordered chicken curry, cabbage, and Mac and cheese. I don’t really like mock meats, but the wings were fun. My partner and I both loved the Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was the BEST vegan Mac I’ve ever had. It even impressed my vegetarian partner. who said it was better than most dairy Mac and cheese he’s had. There was a lot of food, so I had to share my wings with my partner.

We decided to walk around a few neighborhoods, just for fun. We wandered Columbia Heights and stopped at Sticky Fingers. They won Cupcake Wars. However, we couldn’t really stomach a cupcake after all the soul food, we were too full of food. I managed to save eat a peanut butter cookie though.

The next day in DC and we got started early again. We went to even more museums. Then we decided to go check out the concert venue. On the way to the venue we stopped for some lunch. We ate at Calabash tea and tonic. They had some amazing food and beverage options. My partner and I both opted for the iced drinks. My partner got kombucha and I got lavender lemonade. We got vegan Jamaican patties to eat and I got a vegan cookie for good measure.

 

We wandered around the neighborhood where the concert venue was for about and hour and visited the African American Civil War Museum. We still had lots of time to kill before the concert so we went around the corner to Bus Boys and Poets. It’s a restaurant and book store and the perfect place for us. We ordered the vegan nachos to share. It was a tower of food. As we were eating I watched a band member walk down the street by the restaurant and got even more excited for the show. After eating we went to the venue to ensure we got front row seats. We got front row seats and had an amazing time at the concert.

 

 

Our final half day in D.C. We walked to all the monuments in D.C. we didn’t get to see. My partner was so jealous of my chicken fried steak at Fare Well, he insisted we eat there again so he could get his own plate. So we took an Uber over because it was hot and I didn’t feel like walking more. I ordered the s’mores shake and some pancakes for lunch. I know, I eat a lot of pancakes, but for the first time since going vegan I didn’t have to cook them!

Bonus picture: I wore my Captain America dress the day of the concert and found a Captain America shield at the US history museum.

White Duck Taco: Greenville, SC

Before going to the concert we needed a nice meal. Tacos are always a great option. My special person and I love trying different taco shops. White Duck Taco started in Asheville, NC, but recently opened up shop in Greenville, SC as well.

I ordered 2 banh mi tacos and a peach sangria. The peach sangria was a nice drink; though, like most sangrias, it would have been nicer in the summer. The banh me tacos were a bit of a disappointment. The tofu was raw. It had an amazing sauce and the other aspects of the taco were wonderful. However, one of the thinks I love about banh mis the the contrast of warm substance with cool condiments (okay, maybe I’m odd).

After getting tacos we decided to pop into the brewery next door: Birds Fly South Ale Project. I ordered a pint of their coffee stout. It was really good. Maybe we should have just stopped the tacos and had beer for dinner…

Biscuit Head: Greenville, SC

I love breakfast and brunch. One of the things I haven’t eaten since becoming vegan is a biscuit. This is strange, in part because I’m Southern and a biscuit covered with jam was one of my favorite breakfasts to grab before going vegan. A quick google search for vegan breakfast Greenville popped up with Biscuit Head.

I learned a lot at biscuit head. Including, that Cat Head Biscuits are slang for biscuits the size of a cat head (the restaurant is covered with cat stuff and the table numbers are adorable pictures of cats). Biscuit Head is another restaurant that started out in Asheville, NC and ended up expanding to Greenville.

Anyways, they have a biscuit offering that is vegan and gluten free. I’m not gluten free, but it was my option. It wasn’t as fluffy or traditional as a normal biscuit, but the vegan/gluten free biscuit was still tasty and reminded of one of the foods I’ve missed most.

One of the most magical thing about Biscuit Head is the jam bar (which included vegan butter as one of the offerings). I sampled a lot of jams on the jam bar (because it’s what I do best). My favorite was the Bananas Foster Jam (it was good enough I purchased a jar to bring home!).

Another magical thing about Biscuit Head is that they have vegan gravy options. My partner ordered one of those: coconut sweet potato gravy. I’ve never been a fan of biscuits and gravy. I was strictly a jam girl; however, the sweet potato coconut gravy was so amazing it converted me. I would eat that gravy on anything!
